KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Lady Vols open the 2021 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
The championships run Wednesday through Saturday and open up with the 800 freestyle relay at 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will begin with preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by the championship finals in the evening at 6 p.m. A full schedule is listed below.
A program-best 16 swimmers will compete this week in Greensboro and they will be joined by diver Kara Holt, giving Tennessee 17 competitors. The 17 qualifiers are the second-most in the NCAA this season.
Tennessee's representatives include: Mallory Beil, Bailey Grinter, Olivia Harper, Kaitlin Harty, Mona McSharry, Claire Nguyen, Amanda Nunan, Tjasa Pintar, Nikol Popov, Trude Rothrock, Abby Samansky, Megan Sichterman, Kristen Stege, Emily Sykes, Natalie Ungaretti and Alexis Yager.
Stege enters the championships as the No. 2 and No. 8 seed in the 1650 and 500 freestyle swims. At last month's SEC Championships, Stege shattered the school record in the 1650 free, swimming a time of 15:47.72. Stege won the SEC title in the event with her swim.
In the 500 free, she put down the program's second-fastest 500 freestyle time at 4:38.38, taking home a silver medal.
In the 100 breaststroke, McSharry is the fifth-seeded swimmer. At SECs, McSharry's time of 57.82 broke the previous school record time of 58.22 held by Olympian and LVFL Molly Hannis. The Sligo, Ireland, native won silver in the event at SECs.
McSharry has the 10th seeded time in the 200 breast at 2:07.13 and the 18th time in the 50 free with a 22.07.
Pintar enters the 100 free as the ninth seed with a best time of 47.82. The Ljubljana, Slovenia, native is 11th in the 200 free, qualifying with a 1:44.40. Pintar is also eligible to swim to 200 IM and has the 40th seeded time in the event at 1:57.46.
Last season, the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships were canceled due to the Coronavirus global pandemic. The last time UT competed at NCAAs was in 2019, when it finished eighth. The Lady Vols have finished top-10 at the Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships the last two times the meet was held.
