Vols Roll Past Duke, 4-0, Improve to 7-0
February 05, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A sixth doubles point in seven dual matches and three dominant straight-set wins in singles play, pushed the 10th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team to a dominant, 4-0 win over Duke on Friday at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The win was Tennessee's (7-0) fourth shutout of the season and marked just the second time the Blue Devils (2-3) had been held scoreless.
Doubles was a back-and-forth affair, with the Vols getting the early jump on Duke as the tandem of graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner breezed past the Blue Devil duo of Michael Heller and Faris Khan, 6-2, on court three.
After the Tennessee team of Adam Walton and Pat Harper dropped a tough 6-4 decision at No. 1 to the 55th-ranked team of Sean Sculley and Garrett Johns, the doubles point came down to the result on court two.
There, the nearly unblemished team of junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday used a massive late service break to earn a 7-5 victory over Edu Guell and Andrew Zhang to clinch the doubles point and give UT the early 1-0 advantage.
The victory also improved Monday and Prata to 6-1 on the dual season.
In singles the Vols kept their foot on the gas with three punishing victories to clinch match point at 4-0.
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann dominated Samuel Rubell, 6-2, 6-2, to quickly double the UT lead at the No. 5 position.
On court two, Monday quickly followed with a 6-3, 6-3 dispatching of Guell to increase the Orange & White lead to 3-0. Monday was down 3-1 in the second set before reeling off five consecutive games for the 15th singles victory of his freshman campaign.
At No. 1, Walton improved the Vols record to 7-0—its best start since 2018—as he easily took down Garrett Johns, 6-2, 6-3.
ONE WIN AWAY
Graduate student Luca Wiedenmann's straight-set victory was his 99th career singles victory, leaving him just one win shy of becoming the 10th ever Vol to reach triple-digit singles wins.
HOME SWEET HOME
Friday's win was the Vols 13th consecutive home win and the 23rd in their last 25 home matches, making the Goodfriend Tennis Center and Barksdale Stadium a true home advantage for the Orange & White.
