Third-Ranked Vols Down No. 12 Georgia, 4-2, to Open SEC Play
February 19, 2021 | Men's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. – A dominant display in doubles and a massive three-set match clinching victory for freshman Johannus Monday propelled the third-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 12 Georgia on Friday at the Magill Tennis Complex.
Friday's victory was Tennessee's (12-1, 1-0 SEC) second victory in its last three trips to Georgia (5-1, 0-1 SEC) and just the fifth time the Vols have won in Athens since 1990.
In doubles play, the Australian tandem of Pat Harper and Adam Walton rolled past Trent Bryde and Blake Croyder, 6-4 on court one, earning their 13th win as a pair and their fourth in their last five dual matches.
At the No. 3 position, graduate student Giles Hussey and senior Mark Wallner quickly followed and clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory of their own over Baptiste Anselmo and Erik Grevelius. The duo fought back from 4-1 down to clinch the match and give the Vols the early 1-0 lead.
Ninth-ranked Trent Bryde put Georgia on the board as he took down Walton in straight sets on court one.
Minutes later, graduate student Luca Wiedenmann earned his 20th consecutive singles win to put UT back up by one with a comprehensive 6-1, 6-4 win over Anselmo on court five.
Georgia's Britton Johnston continued the afternoon's back-and-forth affair as he knocked off Andrew Rogers on court six to knot things up at 2-2.
Less than five minutes later junior Martim Prata put the Vols on the brink of match point with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Erik Grevelius at No. 4.
With two matches still on court and the Vols leading 3-2, Monday—who was down, 2-6, 4-4—reeled off wins in eight consecutive games to earn a massive three-set victory over No. 18 Philip Henning, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the Orange & White's 12th win of dual play.
RANKED WINS BECOMING THE NORM
Friday's win was Tennessee's sixth over a ranked opponent during the dual season and its fourth over a team inside the top-15.
Likewise, Monday's victory over Henning marked his fifth ranked win of the dual season, meaning that 50 percent (5-of-10) of his dual match singles wins have come over ranked foes.
DOUBLES DOES IT AGAIN
UT's win marked the 30th consecutive match the Vols have won when claiming the doubles point.
UP NEXT
Tennessee will take a week-long break before returning for a full weekend of SEC play when it takes on Mississippi State next Friday at 2 p.m. and Ole Miss next Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches are set to take place outside at Barksdale Stadium in front of guests of participating student-athletes and coaches.
