February 17, 2021 | Men's Tennis
In what is becoming a weekly routine, the Tennessee men's tennis team has swept the SEC weekly honors for the third time in four weeks the conference announced Wednesday.
Freshman Johannus Monday has earned his fourth consecutive Freshman of the Week Award and graduate student Luca Wiedenmann garnered his first SEC Player of the Week honor of the season, following victories over No. 3 TCU and No. 5 Texas this past weekend at the ITA Indoor National Championships.
In Champaign, the duo combined for a 6-2 record, with Wiedenmann winning both of his finished singles contests and Monday going 2-1 in both singles and doubles.
Tennessee's fifth-year athlete and Munich, Germany native is currently riding an 18-match win streak in singles play.
On Saturday against TCU, Wiedenmann rolled past Juan Martin, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 5 position to give the Vols a 2-1 advantage in the match. The victory was the 100th career victory for Wiedenmann who became just the 10th-ever Vol to eclipse the century mark in career singles triumphs.
On Sunday, Wiedenmann clinched his 19th career team match point as he battled past Chih Chi Huang in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 to push UT past the other UT, 4-2.
In Tennessee's lone loss of the weekend against North Carolina on Friday, when the Tar Heels clinched match point, Wiedenmann had just forced a deciding third set against No. 100 Josh Peck.
In doubles play, Monday and partner Martim Prata went 2-1, helping Tennessee clinch the doubles point in its victories over TCU and Texas.
On Saturday, they knocked off the 24th-ranked pair of Sander Jong and Tadeas Paroulek, 6-4, and on Sunday they took down Texas' Payton Holden and Huang, 6-2. The Orange & White are currently riding a 28-match win streak when claiming the doubles point.
In singles play, Monday was the lone point for Tennessee against North Carolina as he rolled past No. 55 Rinky Hijikata, 6-4, 6-2.
Following a tough loss in his match against TCU, the Hull, England native bounced back against Texas, defeating No. 120 Eliot Spizzirri, 7-6(4), 6-4 to put Tennessee up 3-0 and on the brink of match point.
Monday is now 18-4 overall in singles and 16-7 in doubles, with seven combined victories over ranked singles opponents doubles pairs during the dual season.
Tennessee has claimed seven of the eight SEC Weekly Awards for the 2021 dual season.
The third-ranked Vols—who boast a near perfect 10-1 record—return to action on Wednesday against Charlotte at 2:30 p.m. ET, before opening SEC play on the road at Georgia on Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
