Vols Finish Tied for Eighth at Gators Invitational
February 13, 2021 | Men's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Tennessee men's golf team wrapped up competition at its opening tournament of the spring Saturday, finishing tied for eighth place at the Gators Invitational.
Â
The tournament was originally scheduled to be completed on Sunday, but anticipated inclement weather conditions caused teams to play through the third round on Saturday after already having played midway through round two on Friday.
Â
As a team, Tennessee shot 12-under 828 over the course of the tournament's three rounds.
Â
"Today was a continuation from yesterday for us with our struggles on and around the greens," head coach Brennan Webb said. "I was very proud of the round that Spencer played today, especially after making double bogey on 8.
Â
"His back nine really salvaged what could have been an even more disappointing week for us. I'm really looking forward to getting home and beginning our qualifying process for LSU."
Â
Spencer Cross led the way for the Vols, finishing tied for 11th place with a 6-under 204 performance. Cross' back nine of round three consisted of five birdies.
Â
His tied for 11th place finish is his highest of the 2020-21 season and his best since a fourth-place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in October 2019. For the second time this season, Cross shot all three rounds par or better.
Â
Rhys Nevin was Tennessee's second-highest finisher, coming in tied for 24th place and shooting 4-under 206. It marks Nevin's team-leading 22nd career top-25 finish.
Â
Bryce Lewis narrowly missed out on a top-25 finish, tying for 28th place. Lewis shot 3-under 207 for the weekend, carding all three rounds par or better. His 10 rounds of par or better this season lead the team.
Â
Brayden Garrison tied for 93rd place, carding a 7-over 217. Garrison shot even par in the first two rounds of competition.
Â
Despite carding higher totals during rounds one and two, Hunter Wolcott contributed a counting round for Tennessee during round three. Wolcott tied for 99th place and shot 8-over 218 overall.
Â
Competing as an individual, Tyler Johnson shot 1-over 211 and tied for 57th place in his first action of the 2020-21 season.
Â
Tennessee is set to return to action in just under two weeks on Feb. 26 in Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU Invitational.
