KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee men's tennis head coach Chris Woodruff announced the signing of Chattanooga transfer Tomas Rodriguez Thursday. Rodriguez will join the Vols for the 2022 fall season.
"Tomas will be a terrific addition to our program," Woodruff said. "He's a seasoned player, highly competitive and a terrific team player. We are expecting him to carry those same qualities from UTC to our program."
In three seasons thus far at Chattanooga, the native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, has compiled an overall singles mark of 64-30, as well as a 57-25 overall doubles record with the Mocs.
As a freshman in 2018-19, his 21 singles victories tied for the team lead and he led the team with a 23-5 doubles mark. He was 19-4 in doubles dual matches and 18-3 at the No. 2 doubles slot. Following his freshman campaign, Rodriguez was named to the All-SoCon Second Team in doubles with teammate Niklas Gerdes and also made the SoCon All-Freshman Team that season.
Rodriguez led the Mocs in singles as a sophomore in 2019-20, with a 23-8 overall record which included a 15-2 mark in the spring. He was 14-2 at the No. 2 singles position. His 16-9 doubles record that year was also a team-best, as he logged a perfect 11-0 mark at No. 2 with Gerdes. He won the singles title at the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic as a sophomore and was named an ITA Scholar Athlete at season's end.
In the 2020-21 season, Rodriguez once again led the team with a 20-10 singles record, including an 11-8 mark at the No. 1 slot. His 18-11 doubles record was a team-best and he went 11-6 at No. 1 doubles with Peyton Gatti. He became the first Moc to be named SoCon Player of the Week twice in a single season, receiving the honor on Jan. 29 and March 8 of the 2021 spring season.
He wrapped up his third season at Chattanooga by earning First Team All-SoCon honors in doubles, as well as earning the SoCon Commissioner's Medal which is awarded to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.8 or higher throughout the year.
Prior to his time at UTC, Rodriguez prepped at Colegio Everest in Santiago, Chile, and qualified for the ITA World Cup each of the four years leading up to his freshman season with the Mocs.
