Woodruff Announces 2021 Spring Schedule
January 04, 2021 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – 16 opponents ranked inside the top-50 of last season's final ITA rankings, a trip to Raleigh, North Carolina for the 2021 ITA Kick-Off Weekend and 13 SEC foes, highlight the Tennessee men's tennis team's 2021 spring schedule.
"Obviously the schedule is very tough this year, but we know we have formidable players on this team equipped to handle it," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "Although it is difficult, we don't think about how difficult it is. We're just focused on the process of trying to get better day-by-day and if we do that, things will fall where they may come the end of the season."
The Big Orange open the season with the Tar Heel Challenge in Chapel Hill, Jan. 10 and 11. The event will be a round-robin format featuring North Carolina and Charlotte. The Tar Heels finished last year's shortened season ranked second in the nation.
The next Saturday, UT will open dual match play with a double-header against Oklahoma and Tennessee Tech on Jan. 16. Both matches will take place indoors at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The following week, the Vols will hit the road for a dual matchup with Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Jan. 19, before heading to Raleigh for ITA Kick-Off weekend against SEC foe Ole Miss, on Jan. 22 and a date with either N.C. State or Alabama on Jan. 23. All four squads in Raleigh were ranked at the conclusion of last season.
Tennessee will lead into conference play with home bouts with Notre Dame (Jan. 29), Duke (Feb. 5), N.C. State (Feb. 7) and Charlotte (Feb. 17). These matches surround a potential trip to the 2021 ITA Indoor Championships, Feb. 12-15.
UT's final non-conference contest is slated for March 19 against Louisville at Barksdale Stadium.
In SEC play, the Vols are set to play home matches against Mississippi State (Feb. 26), Ole Miss (Feb. 28), Vanderbilt (March 26), Kentucky (March 28), LSU (Apr. 9) and Texas A&M (Apr. 11).
On the road the Big Orange will clash with Georgia (Feb. 19), South Carolina (March 5), Florida (March 7), Auburn (March 12), Alabama (March 14) and Arkansas (Apr. 4).
The 2021 SEC Tournament is set for Apr. 21-25 in Fayetteville at the home of hosts, Arkansas.
All home matches played inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center will be conducted without fans per SEC COVID-19 protocols. Information regarding fans at outdoor matches played at Barksdale Stadium will be announced at a later date.
