January 22, 2021 | Men's Tennis
RALEIGH, N.C. – Four straight-set victories in singles play after dropping the doubles point, propelled the 13th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team past No. 17 Ole Miss, 4-2, on Friday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The win was the Vols (4-0) fifth consecutive victory over the Rebels (0-2), tying UT's longest win streak over Ole Miss.
In doubles play, the Big Orange got off to a quick start, as the tandem of junior Martim Prata and freshman Johannus Monday easily took down the Ole Miss duo of Nikola Slavic and Jakob Cadonau, 6-2, for their fourth consecutive win as a pair.
Ole Miss battled back, claiming tiebreak victories on courts one and three to take a 1-0 lead into singles action.
In singles play, graduate student Giles Hussey immediately knotted the score at 1-1 as he rolled past Simon Junk, 6-2, 6-4 for his seventh consecutive singles win, tying his longest win streak of the year. The victory also improved his dual match ledger to 3-0.
Prata followed Hussey, earning a 7-5, 6-4 win on court three over Nikola Slavic to give the Vols their first lead of the afternoon. Prata remains a perfect 4-0 in both singles and doubles in dual play.
At No. 1, 24th-ranked Adam Walton returned to the lineup to take down No. 62 Tim Sandkaulen in two tiebreaks, 7-6(5), 7-6(3) for his first win of the dual season, while giving UT a massive 3-1 advantage.
After Monday dropped a heartbreaking three-set match at No. 2, Tennessee's match clincher, Luca Wiedenmann dismantled J. Hallquist Lithen on court five, 6-1, 6-1 to send the Vols to a Saturday showdown with NC State.
