KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — After a 321-day hiatus from official competition, the Tennessee track & field program will open its 2021 campaign this weekend at the Commodore Indoor in Nashville. The meet is set for Friday and Saturday at the Vanderbilt track & field complex.
MEET INFO: Friday's opening session will begin at 5 p.m. ET with the women's high jump and weight throw and conclude at approximately 9 p.m. with the men's 5,000-meter. Saturday's action will begin at 1 p.m. with the women's shot put and wrap up at 4:45 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
Tennessee will send a group of 48 athletes to the meet, competing against six other SEC programs: Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri and Vanderbilt (women). Meet entries and performance lists can be found at this link.
FOLLOW LIVE: Spectators are not allowed for the Commodore Indoor. The meet will be streamed live both days on the Vanderbilt Athletics YouTube channel (Friday Stream / Saturday Stream), and live results will be provided throughout the weekend via C.F.P.I. Timing.
TRACK DEBUTS: Of Tennessee's 48 competitors in Nashville, 14 will be making their first track & field appearances for the Big Orange: Israel Adesina, Carolyn Barksdale, Elliot Barner, Garison Breeding, Spencer Brown, Skylar Coffey, Ellison Colarossi, Thomas Gardiner, Mike Griffin, Eli Nahom, Ethan Robinson, Callie Tucker, Mikele Vickers and Zoe Vlk.
2020 REWIND: The Vols and Lady Vols totaled three SEC individual championships, eight SEC event medals, four school records, three freshman records and 24 top-10 program marks during the 2020 indoor season. Due to the COVID-19 global health crisis, Tennessee's latest campaign concluded just prior to the NCAA Indoor National Championships on March 12.
The Tennessee men recorded their best finish and point total at the indoor conference meet since 2009, placing fifth in the team standings with 67 points. Carey McLeod led the team with 18 points, winning the gold medal in the men's long jump with a school-record leap of 8.19m (26-10.5) while taking home silver in the triple jump. He was later named the SEC and USTFCCCA South Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year.
UT also won both the men's and women's shot put titles at the 2020 SEC indoor meet, marking the eighth time in conference history a school accomplished that feat. Joseph Maxwell and Latavia Maines made their way to the top of the podium with throws of 19.83m (65-0.25) and 16.84m (55-3) respectively.
Another standout performance for the Big Orange last season came on January 18 at the Virginia Tech Invitational, when senior high jumper Darryl Sullivan cleared 2.33 meters (7-7.75) to tie the all-time SEC indoor record and No. 4 jump in collegiate indoor history. Sullivan was named to the Bowerman Watch List twice before his campaign was cut short.
