Andrew Rogers Named to 2019-20 SEC Community Service Team
April 16, 2020 | Men's Tennis
BRIMINGHAM, Ala. – Tennessee junior Andrew Rogers has been named to the 2019-20 men's tennis SEC Community Service Team, the conference office announced Thursday.
In a continuing effort to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes beyond the field of competition, the SEC once again highlighted a Community Service Team for men's tennis for the 2019-20 season.
All league-sponsored sports have had a Community Service Team since 2004, which highlights athletes from each school that give back to their community in superior service efforts.
A captain on the men's tennis team, Rogers led by example on and off the court. He spent time during the fall visiting with local Knoxville elementary schools as a part of the Movin & Groovin Health Fair to encourage children to be active, exercise and play each day.
The Brentwood, Tenn., native also spent time volunteering at Tennessee's annual Voloween. The event brings in families from around Knoxville for a night of trick-or-treating in the Anderson Training Center with UT's coaches and student-athletes.
As a member of Tennessee's VOLeaders Academy, Rogers traveled with the cohort to the Republic of Rwanda in Central Africa. The 10 day trip saw Rogers and the cohort partner with the UTIA Smith Center for International Sustainable Agriculture which leads a UT-Rwanda partnership in helping support Musanze households in small-scale broiler chicken enterprises. Rogers and the VOLeaders program also worked with Shooting Touch which uses basketball to provide women's empowerment as well as providing health and wellness testing. While on the trip, the cohort helped build a new school and used sports to connect with the people of Rwanda.
