Men’s Golf Central: Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's golf team travels west to compete in its second tournament of the spring this week, heading to Chula Vista, Calif. for the 13th annual Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic.
The two-day, three-round tournament begins on Monday and concludes on Tuesday.
This year's appearance at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic marks the third straight season in which Tennessee has competed in the state of California. Tennessee has competed at the event, which was previously named the San Diego Intercollegiate, on one other occasion. In 2012, the Vols tied for fourth place.
This year's Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic field features 19 teams, including five teams ranked in the top 25. Tennessee is one of three SEC teams, joined by Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
In its opening tournament of the spring season, Tennessee finished tied for 13th at the Puerto Rico Classic. Redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott led the way for the Vols, tying for 28th place overall and shooting 215 (-1).
Monday's competition, which will feature two rounds of play, is scheduled to get underway at 11:15 a.m. ET. The third and final round on Tuesday is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET.
THE VOLS' LINEUP
Spencer Cross
During the fall, Cross finished as the team leader in stroke average with a 71.64 mark. The junior also leads the team in top-10 finishes with two and has the best 54-hole score of any golfer so far this season (204 at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate).
Rhys Nevin
Nevin gave Tennessee its second-best finish at the Puerto Rico Classic, shooting 221 (+5) and tying for 47th place. He was also one of five Vols to compete in five tournaments during the fall, registering a 71.86 stroke average in the process. The Cheshire, England native tied for fourth place at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in September and finished inside the top 25 at every other fall tournament.
Hunter Wolcott
Tennessee's highest finisher at the Puerto Rico Classic, Wolcott shot 215 (-1) and tied for 28th place. Named the 2019 Tennessee Amateur Golfer of the Year in December, Wolcott competed in five fall tournaments and tied for second place at the Intercollegiate at the Grove in October. Wolcott posted a fall stroke average of 73.07.
Bryce Lewis
Tennessee's lone underclassman set to compete in San Diego, Lewis was one of four Vols to participate in 14 rounds of competition during the fall. Among that group of four, Lewis finished the fall with the second best stoke average (71.79), registering a high finish of tied for 13th at the Intercollegiate at the Grove. The freshman is also tied for the team lead in rounds of par or better with nine.
Tyler Johnson
Johnson entered the spring as the team leader in stroke average among players that competed in at least two fall tournaments and recorded an individual win at the Intercollegiate at the Grove in October. At the Puerto Rico Classic, Johnson finished in 68th place.
VOLS' INDIVIDUAL
Chase Roswall
Roswall is set to compete in the Coronado Individual, a 24-player event that will also take place on Monday and Tuesday in the San Diego area. Roswall is set to tee off at 11:30 a.m. ET on Monday. Live results for the event can be found HERE.
The redshirt sophomore was Tennessee's third-best finisher at the Puerto Rico Classic last month, shooting 223 (+7) and tying for 54th place. During the fall, Roswall competed in two fall tournaments, registering a best finish of 24th place at the Intercollegiate at the Grove. In two seasons of competition, Roswall has recorded three top-25 finishes.
