Vols Tied for Second Entering Final Round at Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic

Nevin tied for sixth through two rounds
CHULA VISTA, Calif. – Despite harsh weather conditions throughout the day, the Tennessee men's golf team navigated a tough field at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic and sits in a tie for second place after Monday's first and second rounds of competition.

As a team, Tennessee shot even par for the day on Monday – 285 (-3) during round one and 291 (+3) during round two. During a day that was largely plagued by rain, the Vols held steady near or at the top of the leaderboard for the entirety of the first two rounds.

During the first round, Tennessee shot 285 (-3) and was tied for second with Colorado, four strokes out of the lead. After round two, the Vols remain tied for second place, but are just one stroke back of tournament leader San Francisco (-1).

Senior Rhys Nevin was Tennessee's top performer of the day, shooting a total of 142 (-2) through two rounds. Entering round three of play, Nevin is tied for sixth place.

In round one, Nevin shot 3-under, which was tied for the second-best score in the 100-golfer field. For the day as a whole, the Cheshire, England native shot seven birdies and one eagle.

Competing in his first tournament of the spring, Bryce Lewis gave Tennessee its second-best score of day one. The redshirt freshman shot 144 (E) and currently sits in a tie for 16th place.

Lewis' 1-under par showing in round one was his 10th round of par or better during the 2019-20 season, which is tied for the most on the team. Like Nevin, Lewis also had seven birdies and an eagle in round one.

Also in his first action of the spring, junior Spencer Cross came in tied for 27th place after two rounds. During round one in which he shot even par, Cross tied Lewis for the team lead with his 10th round of par or better of the season.

Tied for 42nd place, Tyler Johnson gave Tennessee its fourth counting round during round one, shooting a 73 (+1). Overall for the day, Johnson shot 149 (+5).

Despite a rough first round, redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott rebounded to give Tennessee its best score of round two, as he carded a 70 (-2) during the final round of the day. Wolcott's second round included five birdies and saw him climb into a tie for 59th place.

Tuesday's third and final round is scheduled to get underway at 11:30 a.m. ET. Rain is once again in the forecast, but competition is expected to go on as scheduled.
