Lady Vols in Seventh After First Day at Florida Gators Invitational
March 07, 2020 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After two rounds at the Florida Gators Invitational, the Lady Vols golf team sits in seventh by carding a team score of 601 (+41). The team wraps up competition tomorrow with the final round beginning around 9 a.m. ET.
"This is a tough course and it was cool and windy all day," head coach Judi Pavon said. "We got off to a decent start but lost a lot of shots on the 8-12 holes, which was an easier stretch. We need to take care of the easier holes better. We actually did well on some of the harder holes."
The top finisher for UT was sophomore Malia Stovall and freshman Nicole Whiston, both recording 149 (+9) and tying for 21st out of 72 participants.
"Malia was pretty solid today," Pavon said. "She didn't have any birdies which makes it hard to score, but she made a lot of pars. Nicole bounced back in the second 18 with a good round."
In the first round, Stovall carded a 74 (+4) and followed that up with a 75 in the second. Whiston shot a 77 (+7) in the opening round and improved in the second by shooting a 72 and tallying a birdie.
Next for the Big Orange was sophomore Hadley Walts, tying for 35th with 151 (+11) strokes. In the first round she shot a 74 and carded a 77 in the following. Throughout the two rounds, the sophomore tallied four birdies.
Senior Micheala Williams sits in 38th after shooting a 75 in the first and a 77 in the second, totaling 152 (+12). The senior totaled for two birdies on the day.
Rounding out the lineup was junior Waverly Whiston, carding an 80 (+10) in the first round and 78 in the following to total for 158 (+18).
"We put ourselves behind the right ball with these two rounds today, so I am looking for another good final round," Pavon said. "We need to move ahead of a couple teams that are within reach on the leaderboard."
Individually, sophomore Mikayla Bardwell is tied for 17th after recording a 72 (+2) in the opening round and 75 in the second, totaling 147 (+7) strokes.
"Mikayla as an individual is in pretty good shape for the two rounds," Pavon added.
