Vols Fall To Vanderbilt In SEC Quarterfinals, 4-2
November 17, 2020 | Soccer
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Tennessee's fall season concluded in the SEC Soccer Tournament quarterfinals, as the Vols fell to Vanderbilt 4-2 Tuesday afternoon at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
Â
Junior All-SEC forward Mackenzie George accounted for both scores for the Big Orange, finding the back of the net in the 23rd and 85th minutes. The goals were the first two of the season for George, who also logged the first brace of her collegiate career.
Â
Vanderbilt (6-4-0) built an early two-goal advantage in the first half, notching scores in the eighth and 18th minutes. All-SEC midfielder Maddie Elwell tallied the opener for the Commodores, connecting from 12 yards into the top shelf for her second goal of the tournament. Ten minutes later, Vandy converted on a corner kick set piece as Leila Azari scored off the Tennessee deflection from point-blank range.
Â
George cut the Vanderbilt lead in half midway through the opening frame with her first score of the 2020 campaign. The Lincoln, California, native fended off three Commodores inside the 18-yard box, found space and took a shot that spilled its way into the lower right corner.
Â
Vandy added two more to its tally in the second half to put the match out of reach. After a Tennessee foul in the box, Kimya Raietparvar converted a penalty kick to make it 3-1 Commodores in the 58th minute. Junior midfielder Raegan Kelley scored the fourth for Vanderbilt, placing the ball in the left corner of the netting off a long service from goalkeeper Sarah Fuller.
Â
George tallied the match's sixth and final goal in the 85th minute with another incredible individual effort. Receiving the ball in the lower right corner of the 18, she poked it past a pair of Vanderbilt defenders and fired a 15-yard curling shot into the left upper 90.
Â
UP NEXT: This marks the end of the 2020 fall campaign for Tennessee soccer. With the postponement of the NCAA Tournament to the spring of 2021, the Vols' season will continue next semester no earlier than February 3. Opponents, dates and locations for the spring will be announced at a later date.
