French Earns Second TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week Honor
November 10, 2020 | Soccer
CULVER CITY, Calif. — Tennessee senior defender Wrenne French has been named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women's Team of the Week for the second time this season, as the publication released its weekly honors Tuesday morning. The center back from Franklin, Tennessee, clinched an SEC East title for the Big Orange with her game-winning score on Senior Night, propelling the Vols to a 1-0 victory over No. 9 South Carolina last Friday.
Â
"Everyone is elated for Wrenne," head coach Brian Pensky said. "Last week was special. Senior night. Game-winning goal. Shutout. And an SEC East Championship. This honor is icing on the cake for a deserving kid!"
Â
French's heroic division-clinching tally came in the 50th minute, heading a ball in off the corner kick service from Claudia Dipasupil. It was the second career goal for French and her first of the 2020-21 campaign.
Â
As Tennessee's starting center back, French played all 90 minutes against South Carolina and helped the Vols secure their second shutout win over a top-10 opponent this season. UT's defensive unit shut down the league's top scoring offense, limiting the Gamecocks to 11 shot attempts on the way to the clean sheet.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Romig was additionally named a TDS Team of the Week honorable mention, as she returned from injury and recorded three saves in the 1-0 victory.
"Lindsey showed guts and courage last week," Pensky said. "She was sick as a dog, body barely at 65%, playing against a very dangerous set-piece team. Nice to see her recognized as well."
Â
With the win, Tennessee locked up the No. 2 seed and a double-bye into the quarterfinals for next week's SEC Tournament in Orange Beach, Alabama. The Vols claimed the SEC East crown after finishing the fall campaign with a 4-1-1 record (13 points) in divisional play, overtaking the Gamecocks who posted a 4-2-0 record (12 points) against SEC East opponents this season.
Â
UT will open the conference showcase on Tuesday, November 17 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, facing either the No. 7 or No. 10 seed at 1 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
