Lady Vols in Ninth Place Following Round Two of The Blessings Collegiate
October 06, 2020 | Women's Golf
FAYETTEVILL, Ark. – Difficult pin placements and a few untimely big numbers place the Tennessee women's golf team in ninth place at the conclusion of the second round of The Blessings Collegiate Invitational.
"The hole locations were really tough on our starting holes, which got us off to a rough start," head coach Judi Pavon said. "The course is so tough that it's hard to recover from early mistakes."
Following a second consecutive round in the 70s, graduate student Micheala Williams sits in a tie for 28th as the highest Lady Vol on the leaderboard (+8, 152). Williams fired home a more consistent +3 (75), carding just four bogeys to go along with her lone birdie on the par 5 15th.
Sophomore Nicole Whiston put together the most complete round of the day for UT, posting a +1 mark of 73. After starting on the more difficult back nine, Whiston responded well to an opening nine score of 40 (+4) by draining three birdies and no bogeys on the Orange & White's back nine (-3, 33).
"Nicole hit her driver really well on the second nine today and put herself in position to play well," Pavon said. "She took advantage of her birdie opportunities and made a few good par saves as well."
Whiston sits in a tie for 30th at +9 (153) heading into tomorrow's final round.
Joining the younger Whiston sister at +9 is freshman Vanessa Gilly. Gilly struggled at times, but played consistent enough to break 80 for the second consecutive day (+7, 79).
Rounding out the Lady Vols scoring lineup was senior Waverly Whiston who carded a +8 score of 80. The eldest Whiston, sits in a tie for 63rd (+18, 162).
