Four Vols in top 15 after day one in Fayetteville
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Returning to tournament competition for the first time in nearly seven months, the Tennessee men's golf team dominated round one at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational – exiting Monday with an eight-stroke lead over the rest of the field.
The Vols were led by redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott, who leads the 70-man field after shooting four-under 68. As a team, Tennessee finished the day shooting 8-under 280. No other team in the field – composed of all 14 SEC teams – was below par during round one.
"Today was a very solid day," head coach Brennan Webb said. "All of our guys drove the ball great, minimized their mistakes and made some putts.
"I'm looking forward to following the same game plan the next two days and seeing how that stacks up."
Wolcott's outing during day one in Fayetteville consisted of a six birdies – including two by way of highlight reel long range putts on holes 10 and 18. The Burns, Tennessee native also carded an eagle on hole two, setting the tone for his dominant performance.
Though Wolcott led the Vols and the entire field during round one, redshirt freshman Bryce Lewis was just one stroke back at 2-under 70 – leaving him tied for second place overall.
Lewis birdied four times, all of which came on the back nine and three of which came during the final five holes.
Senior Brayden Garrison gave Tennessee' its third-best score, shooting 1-under 71 and contributing three birdies to the Vols' total of 20 on the day.
Garrison's fellow senior Rhys Nevin also turned in a solid day one outing, giving Tennessee its final counting score. Nevin shot even par thanks to four birdies – the final of which came on a difficult putt on hole 18.
Despite not counting towards the Vols' day one total, junior Spencer Cross had a solid outing for Tennessee, shooting 3-over 75. With the exception of two other teams, Cross' score would have been amongst the top four of every competing team.
Tennessee is set to tee off round two at 10:26 a.m. EST on Tuesday. Live coverage will once again begin on Golf Channel at 3:30 p.m. EST and last until 7:30 p.m. EST.
