Vols Dominate in Singles Play at Day One of Bulldog Challenge

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After splitting its four doubles contests, the Tennessee men's tennis team dominated in singles action, claiming wins in seven of its eight matches to push through day one of the Bulldog Challenge on Friday in Starkville.
The UT duos of senior Adam Walton and junior Pat Harper and seniors Andrew Rogers and Mark Wallner each grabbed 8-5 triumphs in doubles action to begin the afternoon.
In singles play, all seven of the Vols victories came in straight-set fashion, with graduate student Giles Hussey and Harper remaining undefeated in singles play on the year.
The first Vol off court was graduate student Luca Wiedenmann, who served up a pair of bagels after rolling past Mississippi State's Nicolas Ocana, 6-0, 6-0. The win was the 86th of Wiedenmann's career, pushing him into a tie for 18th in program history for career singles wins with Tim Jessup.
Hussey and Harper quickly followed Wiedenmann, after each quickly dispatched of MSU's Gregor Ramskogler (6-1, 6-1) and Nemanja Malesevic (6-3, 6-2) respectively.
Making their season debuts, Wallner and Rogers claimed straight set victories of their own. Wallner dominated Ole Miss's Brady Draheim, 6-4, 6-4, while Rogers took down Mississippi State's Stedman Strickland, 6-3, 6-3.
Freshman Johannus Monday continued the UT trend of getting off court quickly, following his comprehensive 6-4, 6-3 victory over MSU's Alberto Colas.
Walton was the final victorious Vol on the afternoon. After battling to a 7-6(2) first-set tiebreak win over the Bulldog's Florian Broska, he used the gained momentum to power past Broska 6-0 in the second to earn his third win of the Fall.
Junior Martim Prata was the lone Vol to fall on the afternoon, dropping a hard-fought three-set match to MSU's Davide Tortora, 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4).
UT gets back on court for tomorrow's afternoon session with Alabama. Doubles action is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
