Bardwell Places Third, Lady Vols Finish Sixth at The Ally
October 21, 2020 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE, Miss. – No scores of par or better during a difficult day in Starkville, dropped the Tennessee women's golf team to a sixth-place team finish (+6, 870) at The Ally at Old Waverly Golf Club.
"The course played a little more difficult today," head coach Judi Pavon said. "But we made some early bogeys and weren't able to make the birdies we had in the other rounds. Then No. 15 cost us several shots."
Following a tie for the lowest round in program history, junior Mikayla Bardwell struggled a bit through the tournament's final day, posting a 2-over par score of 74 to finish in a tie for third at -6 for the tournament.
Despite a tough final round, Bardwell's three-day total of 210 is the lowest 54-hole score of her career, her third-place finish is the best finish of her career and her tournament score of -6 is her lowest 54-hole score in relation to par of her career.
Freshman Vanessa Gilly battled through an up-and-down round to also post a 2-over par score of 74. The Caracas, Venezuela native's three-day score of -2 (214) placed her in a tie for seventh, marking her first career top-10 finish as a member of the Orange & White.
"Vanessa and Mikayla didn't play their best today, but still had really strong finishes in a great field," Pavon continued. "We learned a lot this week and we especially need to improve at the 4-5 spot to be competitive. We have a deep team, so I really believe we can get that corrected moving forward."
Graduate student Micheala Williams had a rough finish to today's round, posting a 4-over par mark of 76. After starting on No. 2, Williams had a steady round of even par going through 13 holes, before an untimely triple bogey at the par five 15th derailed her solid day.
Williams finished the week at +3 (219), in a tie for 29th, placing three Lady Vols inside the top-30.
Sophomore Nicole Whiston also finished the day with a 4-over score of 76 to round out the UT scoring lineup. After a rough first round, Whiston finished the tournament at +16 (232) in a tie for 64th, joined by her sister and fellow Lady Vol, Waverly Whiston.
