Lady Vols Open UT Fall Invite
October 16, 2020 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee women's tennis team opened the UT Fall Invite on Friday with doubles play against South Carolina and singles against Georgia.
Â
"Our girls did a good job in doubles coming out and executing things that we've been working on," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We can still get a lot better but when it's all said and done, I'm proud of the way we competed in doubles."
Â
UT opened the day strong, winning 3-of-4 doubles matches against South Carolina.
Â
Senior Johanna Silva and sophomore Callie Creath downed South Carolina duo Elise Mills and Kendall Couch 6-4 to move to 4-0 on the season. The Lady Vol pair have not lost a match together, owning an all-time 5-0 mark.
Â
Junior Daria Kuczer and Carly Briggs recorded a 6-1 triumph over Gamecocks Emma Shelton and Silvia Chinellato. With the win, Kuczer and Briggs own a 3-1 record this fall.
Â
Junior duo Rebeka Mertena and Kylie Duckworth earned their second-straight win as a pair. They defeated Gabriela Martinez and Lindsay Tulenko 6-4.
Â
"Coming out against Georgia, we know they are a national championship-caliber team and there were really only two matches that I felt we really competed hard in," Ojeda said. "Everywhere else, as well as Georgia played, I feel like we let them take it to us. I'm pretty disappointed in our competitive desire to make it more difficult for our opponent and that is something that we will certainty have an opportunity to work on tomorrow."
Â
Silva earned the lone victory in singles play for the Lady Vols in the opening day of the UT Fall Invite. The Hamburg, Germany native battled for three sets, defeating Georgia's Ariana Arseneault 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to earn her first victory of the fall.
Â
The Lady Vols will continue the UT Fall Invite tomorrow inside Barksdale Stadium. Spectators will not be permitted at the event.
