January 09, 2020 | Soccer
BADAJOZ, Spain -- Former Tennessee standout goalkeeper Shae Yanez (2015-18) has signed a contract with Santa Teresa CD, the club announced in a press conference Thursday.
Â
Based in Badajoz, Spain, Santa Teresa CD holds strong at the top of the table in Spain's second division. Entering the second half of the season, the club owns an 11-2-2 overall record with four wins in its last five matches.
Â
Yanez will head overseas after spending her rookie season with the Washington Spirit of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). The Downingtown, Pennsylvania, native made her NWSL debut October 5, 2019 in a 3-0 win over Orlando and recorded a pair of saves, one of which was later nominated for the league's Save of the Week contest on Twitter.
Â
A four-year letterwinner for the Vols, Yanez saw action in 57 matches with 56 starts between the posts. Logging 4,952 minutes for the Big Orange, she recorded 210 saves, 38 wins and a 0.84 career goals-against average that ranks third in program history.
Â
Yanez put together arguably the greatest statistical goalkeeping campaign in Tennessee history during her senior season in 2018. She posted single-season program records for the highest goalie win percentage (.795), highest save percentage (.856) and lowest GAA (0.66) ever recorded by a Lady Vol.
Â
With Thursday's signing of Yanez, Tennessee now has six women's soccer alumnae in the professional ranks in Europe. The goalkeeper joins VFLs Carlyn Baldwin (midfielder, Sporting CP), Maya Neal (defender, Le Havre AC), Bunny Shaw (forward, Bordeaux), MA Vignola (forward/defender, Thróttur FC) and Hannah Wilkinson (forward, Sporting CP).
