LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 22nd-ranked Tennessee women's tennis team took the doubles point, but fell to 20th-ranked Virginia Saturday at the Jayhawk Tennis Center, 4-3.
"This match was a tough one," head coach Alison Ojeda said. "We did so many great things to give ourselves the lead, but Virginia stepped up and played some very good tennis when they needed to. I'm proud of our girls and we will get better because of today, that I'm sure of."
Tennessee (3-1) won the doubles point for the fourth-straight match behind wins on courts one and three.
On court three, the duo of Ariadna Riley and Carly Briggs defeated Virginia's Vivian Glozman and Rosie Johanson 6-1. The Cavaliers took the match on court two, then the No. 15-ranked Australian duo of Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin took down Chloe Gullickson and Amber O'Dell, 6-2, to put the Lady Vols up 1-0.
No. 76-ranked Tennessee sophomore Rebeka Mertena opened singles scoring with a victory on court two to give UT a 2-0 lead. Mertena defeated UVA's No. 35-ranked Johanson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. The UT sophomore opens 2020 with a 6-1 record, and is undefeated in dual-match play.
UVA's No. 30-ranked Natasha Subhash immediately answered with a win on court one, defeating No. 72-ranked Staines, 6-2, 6-3, to cut the Big Orange lead to 2-1.
UT freshman Briggs defeated O'Dell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to give the Lady Vols a 3-1 lead. The win gives Briggs a 6-1 mark to open her collegiate career.
The Lady Vols fought on the final three courts, sending all three matches to third sets but came up short as UVA took the dual 4-3.
The Lady Vols will stay on the road as they face Purdue Friday, Feb. 7 and Indiana Sunday, Feb. 9.
