Tennessee looks to defend the first of its three titles in Dalton, Ga. after winning the prestigious tournament in a playoff last season
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 16/18 University of Tennessee men's golf team opens up the season at the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga.
The field features 15 teams with the Vols entering as one of four Southeastern Conference teams as Alabama, Florida and South Carolina join them. The field five teams who are in the initial GCAA Coaches Poll with an additional two receiving votes in the poll.
This will be the first of three title defenses for Tennessee this season as last year the Vols won the tournament in a playoff over host Georgia Tech. The Vols led from the outset of the tournament, which included a second round of 12-under-par.
Tennessee, who had three players finish inside of the top 10 in 2018, travel seniors Rhys Nevin and Brayden Garrison as well as redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott who all played in the lineup a season ago.
Nevin and Garrison both placed inside of the top 10 with Nevin shooting a three-round score of 212 (-4) while Garrison was just one stroke back at 213 (-3) and tied for eighth.
Nevin comes into the week as the Vols top qualifier after shooting 14-under of the six qualifying rounds. Wolcott finished third in the qualifiers, shooting 6-under.
They will be joined by junior Spencer Cross as well as redshirt junior Chip Thomas who will be making his debut for Tennessee this weekend.
Tomorrow's first round is scheduled to start at 9:40 a.m. (ET) as Tennessee tees off No. 1 at The Farm Golf Club. The Vols will be paired with host Georgia Tech and South Carolina on the opening day of play.
The Vols' Lineup
Rhys Nevin
The senior was in the top spot in the lineup last season and his top-10 finish helped the Vols to their first team title of the season. Nevin completed his junior season with five top-25 finishes as he was also third on the team with 13 rounds of par or better.
Spencer Cross
Cross earned his spot in the Carpet Capital lineup after placing second in qualifying with a 6-round score of 7-under par. Last season, Cross finished fourth on the team with a 73.11 stroke average over 18 rounds played.
Hunter Wolcott
The Burns, Tenn. native led the Vols in nearly every statistical category last season including stroke average at 71.91. It helped Wolcott earn All-SEC and GCAA All-Southeast Region accolades at the end of his sophomore campaign.
Chip Thomas
After redshirting a season ago, Thomas joins the lineup for the first time in his Tennessee career. The redshirt junior played an integral role in Middle Tennessee advancing to the NCAA Regionals in 2017, earning C-USA All-Freshman Team honors while also earning C-USA Golfer of the Week honors twice that season.
Brayden Garrison
Garrison was one of three players who was in the lineup in every event last season, finishing second on the team with a 72.82 stroke average over 33 rounds of play. The rising senior had 16 rounds of par or better last season while having seven top-25 finishes.
Vols' Individual
Sean Wilcox
Wilcox saw action in three tournaments during the 2018-19 season as an individual. The Frisco, Texas native had his best finish of the season at the Georgia Southern Individual Collegiate, tying for 15th on the leaderboard.
