Three Vols place inside of the top 20 on the individual leaderboard in Toledo, Ohio
TOLEDO, Ohio – The Tennessee men's golf team finished second in the Inverness Intercollegiate field with three players placing inside of the top 20.
Â
After tying for third in the competition a year ago, junior Spencer Cross had a strong finish on Tuesday to help him place inside of the top 15, individually. In the opening round, Cross shot 76 (+5), but quickly rebounded to card a round of 69 (-2) in his second round on Monday.
Â
He followed that up with his second round of par or better in a row, turning in a 71 (E) to close out his tournament. He started the day with a birdie on the par-4 second and from there he would be par or better for the remainder of the round including four birdies on his scorecard.
Â
The round helped him tie as the top Vol on the leaderboard as he was 11th, individually.
Â
Joining him in 11th place was senior Rhys Nevin who has now been Tennessee's top finisher in the first two tournaments of the year. In the Carpet Capital, the Cheshire, England native tied for fourth.
Â
He nearly birdied the 18th to give himself his second top-10 finish of the season, but the putt roll just right of the hole as Nevin settled for par. In the first two tournaments, Cross and Nevin have been the top two Vols on the leaderboard.
Â
Just one stroke back of them was redshirt junior Chip Thomas who picked up his first top-20 finish for Tennessee at 4-over-par for the tournament. After a 74 (+2) in the first round, he responded with 71-72 to close out his tournament, helping the Vols to a runner-up finish in Toledo, Ohio.
Coach's Take
On strong finishes from Rhys Nevin and Spencer Cross in the first two tournaments:
"The strength of our team is our depth. Anyone that's in our lineup is capable of leading on any given week." – Coach Brennan Webb
Â
On finishing second in s strong field of teams:
"We were disappointed not to win, but that was a very special round that beat us. It was a good solid week for us. I was very proud that the guys fought all day today after a slow start and without their best stuff." – Coach Brennan Webb
On playing at The Grove in October:
"The Grove is a fantastic golf course and will be a great test for our guys. It is forgiving off the tee, but has some difficult green complexes."– Coach Brennan Webb
