Vols Hold Eight-Shot Lead at the Intercollegiate at the Grove
October 06, 2019 | Men's Golf
Tennessee has six players sitting inside of the top 10 on the leaderboard and it was the only team to record a round of par or better as a team
COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – After the opening round of the Intercollegiate at the Grove, the Tennessee men's golf team sits atop the leaderboard.
Â
The Vols (-4) carded their second lowest round of the season (284 strokes) to take an eight-shot lead after 18 holes of play. All five players in the lineup are tied for 16th or higher, led by redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott.
Â
Wolcott is in contention for his second individual tournament title after turning in a first round 68 (-4). He is just one stroke off the leader, Hugo Hellman of Lamar and sits two strokes clear of the four-way tie for third.
Â
After a bogey on the fourth hole of his round, Wolcott responded with a birdie just before the turn to get back to even par. In his final seven holes, he poured in four birdies to soar up near the top of the leaderboard, capping off his day with back-to-back birdies.
Â
Sitting two strokes back of him are two Vols individuals in redshirt junior Tyler Johnson and redshirt freshman Jake Hall. Both players tallied three birdies on their scorecards while like Wolcott just having one bogey a piece in the opening round of play.
Â
Three other Tennessee players sit inside of the top 10 heading into Monday's second round as junior Spencer Cross (-1) is tied for seventh while senior Brayden Garrison (E) and redshirt junior Sean Wilcox (E) are tied for 10th.
Â
Tennessee, who was the only team to have a score below par in the first round, will tee off the second round tomorrow between holes No. 1 and No. 5. The Vols will be paired with Lamar (+4), Troy (+4) and Lipscomb (+7) who sit right behind them in the team standings.
Coach's Take
On the eight-stroke lead after round one:
"The guys followed their gameplan very well today. We didn't get off to a great start, but they all stayed patient and took advantage of their opportunities when they came" – Coach Brennan Webb
Â
On feeding off of each other rounds:
"Maintaining positive energy throughout a round, knowing your teammates can feel and see that is something we have worked on over the last year. They did a good job of that today." – Coach Brennan Webb
On Hunter Wolcott's opening round:
"Today was a obviously a good today for Hunter after struggling the last couple of tournaments. I think all of us associated with the team knew that it was only a matter of time until he returned to form." – Coach Brennan Webb
