September 22, 2019 | Soccer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior defender Madiya Harriott scored the golden goal in the 110th minute as Tennessee dropped its first SEC match of the season in overtime to No. 17 Vanderbilt, 1-0 Sunday evening at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Tennessee falls to 6-2-1 on the season.
Â
Entering the match just 38 seconds before scoring the game-winner, Harriott broke up the stalemate with a shot from 12 yards after the ball was knocked around the box on a Vandy corner kick.
Â
Sophomore forward Mackenzie George led the Vols with three shot attempts on the night, including a near chance in overtime at the back post off a cross from Colleen McIlvenna. McIlvenna came off the bench and recorded two shots for the Vols in a career-high 40 minutes of action Sunday night.
Â
Tennessee saw just a couple of close chances in the opening half, as freshmen Sonia Ouchene Salón and McIlvenna recorded UT's only shot attempts. Ouchene Salón pulled up from 20 yards with a shot on target in the 13th minute, while McIlvenna's shot-on-goal came from close range in the 43rd.
Vol forwards Michelle Alozie and Alicia Donley also fired shots on target in the second half. Rookie goalkeeper Lindsey Romig played all 110 minutes between the posts for the first full match of her Tennessee career.
Â
Vanderbilt (8-1) held possession for 56 percent of the contest, outshooting Tennessee 13-8 on the night with a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. The Vols held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net, being shut out for just the second time this season.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee looks to bounce back with its second-straight SEC road match, visiting Auburn on Thursday, Sept. 26. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
