Vols Log 100th Home Shutout With Win Over UC Davis
September 18, 2019 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee closed out its non-conference schedule with a win on Wednesday night, edging the UC Davis Aggies 1-0 at Regal Soccer Stadium. The clean sheet marked Tennessee's 100th home shutout in program history.
Â
UT extended its home winning streak to 10 matches, the longest for the Big Orange since rattling off 11-straight at Regal from 2005-06. Furthermore, the Vols have now defeated 19 consecutive non-conference opponents within the friendly confines of their home pitch - dating to Aug. 25, 2016 and spanning 1,119 days.
Â
Senior forward MA Vignola broke the deadlock in the 74th minute with her second game-winner of the season. The Cincinnati, Ohio native took a pass from sophomore forward Amy Thompson, found space towards the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Â
"We knew it was going to be a tough game tonight," Vignola said following the match. "We wanted to get as many shots as we could, especially on frame. With my goal, I got a great pass out wide from [Amy Thompson] and I took it inside and had a shot. [Coach Brian Pensky] was telling me all game to just get my shots low and to the ground, and make the keeper have to make a save."
Â
Vignola leads the Vols with five goals through seven matches, including three scores in her last two matches. She recorded seven shots on Wednesday night to lead all players.
Â
Neither side found the back of the net in the first half as Tennessee held a 59-41 edge in the battle for possession. The Vols outshot the Aggies 10-2 during the opening frame, while corner kicks were even at two apiece.
Â
For the match, Tennessee attempted 21 shots compared to eight for UC Davis (4-3). UT possessed the ball for 60 percent of the contest and narrowly edged the Aggies in corner kicks, 3-2.
Â
Sophomore keeper Charli Pogany played all 90 minutes between the posts to record the first solo shutout of her collegiate career. The Bradenton, Fla. native had a season-high three saves for the third-straight match.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee opens SEC play Sunday against in-state rival Vanderbilt. The match is scheduled for a 5 p.m. kickoff and will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
Â
"Tonight gives us a little confidence and juice going into Vanderbilt," Pensky said. "Obviously, that's become a real rivalry. It's a great program and they do a great job there … Our kids respect that program, and we're going to be excited to play at their place on Sunday."
