Vols Land Two in ITA Preseason Rankings
September 17, 2019 | Men's Tennis
TEMPE, Ariz. – Two Tennessee Volunteers have been named to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) 2019 Division I Men's Preseason National Rankings, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Junior Adam Walton tops the list for Tennessee with a No. 17 singles ranking after finishing last season 25-6 and ranked No. 32 nationally. The Home Hill, Australia native was 6-1 against ranked opponents a year ago, earning ITA Ohio Valley Player to Watch honors.
Through his first two seasons on Rocky Top, Walton has won 50 matches, including a 20-win total in dual matches in the spring of 2019. The 2019 All-SEC First Team member picked up right where he left off to start the fall season, posting a 7-1 mark and reaching the finals of the main draw at the M15 Champaign Futures tournament.
Senior and fellow Australian Scott Jones landed in the rankings at No. 106. The Perth native posted a 27-12 record during the 2018-19 season, including an 18-9 mark during dual play. Jones has been named an All-SEC Second Teamer the past two years and brings a 72-36 career record into his final season at UT.
In his first three seasons, Jones has season win totals of 22, 23, and 27, respectively. He needs just 11 wins to crack into Tennessee's top 20 in career wins – the No. 20 spot being occupied by Rhyne Williams with 83 career victories.
Tennessee is back in action this weekend as the team splits up, going to Princeton, South Carolina and Milwaukee. Jones begins his fall action at Princeton while Walton enters his second tournament of the year at South Carolina.
