#21 Vols Earn 3-3 Draw At UMass
September 15, 2019 | Soccer
AMHERST, Mass. -- Senior forward MA Vignola tallied the first brace of her career as No. 21 Tennessee earned a 3-3 draw on the road at Massachusetts Sunday afternoon. The Vols move to 5-1-1 on the season with one match remaining in non-conference play.
Â
Freshman midfielder Sonia Ouchene Salón opened the scoring for UT with her second goal in as many matches. The Paterna, Valencia, Spain native broke through in the 37th minute on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box after Vignola drew a foul on the counter attack.
Â
Leading 1-0 at the break, Tennessee created a cushion in the 64th minute, as Vignola buried her first of the match on a penalty kick. Graduate transfer forward Michelle Alozie earned the PK after drawing a hard foul inside the box.
Â
UMass (3-2-2) responded with back-to-back goals in quick succession, as Melissa Kossler and Lauren Bonavita scored 65 seconds apart to equalize the match with 23 minutes remaining in regulation.
Â
Vignola helped Tennessee regain momentum with her second goal of the match in the 75th minute. Taking a long service from redshirt-senior center back Maya Neal, Vignola willed herself beyond the Minutewomen's back line and tapped the ball into an open net - putting UT ahead 3-2.
Â
The final equalizer came on Kossler's second score of the day, connecting on a close-range opportunity in the 86th minute to force overtime. The Vols scattered a few close chances in the extra minutes but were ultimately unable to find the golden goal.
Â
Shots were deadlocked at 13 between both teams, while Tennessee held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. The intensity on the field was evident on the box score as UT and UMass combined for 29 fouls and five cards.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee returns to Regal Soccer Stadium for its regular season non-conference finale Wednesday night. The Vols are set to host UC Davis with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
