Erika Brown Wins Silver at the Phillips 66 National Championships
August 01, 2019 | Swimming & Diving
STANFORD, Calif. – Tennessee swimmer and rising senior Erika Brown opened her Phillips 66 National Championships competition on Wednesday in the 100 meter freestyle, taking home a silver medal and cracking into the top-5 of the United States' fastest long course 100m swims this year.
Brown swam a 54.13 in the finals of the 100m, touching the wall in second place behind 2016 Olympian and gold medalist Abbey Weitzeil. She is now tied with Gretchen Walsh for the fifth-fastest LC 100m freestyle during the 2019 season. Weitzeil's time of 53.18 places her third on that list.
With her swim, Brown is well below the USA Swimming Olympic Trials time standard (56.29) for the 100m and has locked in her place to compete for a spot on the 2020 US Olympic Team at the Olympic Trials next summer in Omaha.
Joining Brown in the pool for the opening night of the national championships were several of her Tennessee teammates. Josh Walsh, recent Tennessee graduate Kyle DeCoursey, Nolan Briggs and Alec Connolly swam in the men's 4x100 meter free relay, finishing fifth overall at 3:20.66.
Amanda Nunan punched her ticket to the Olympic Trials in the women's 800m freestyle as she placed 14th with a time of 8:37.49. The rising junior was well below the time standard of 8:48.09 to qualify for the US Olympic Trials.
Trude Rothrock swam a 56.24 in the women's 100m free, clinching her spot at trails. DeCoursey clocked in with a 50.26 in the men's 100m free to earn his way to the US Olympic Team Trials.
Finals for the meet will be aired on the NBC Sports Network with streaming available on usaswimming.org, nbcsports.com or the olympicchannel.com. The full broadcast schedule can be found here. Tickets for nationals are still available at usaswimming.org/tickets.
