WTEN SUMMER UPDATE: Staines, McGiffin Capture Tournament Wins
June 12, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Tennessee women's tennis rising juniors Kaitlin Staines and Tenika McGiffin each registered tournament wins to start the summer over the weekend.
Â
Staines, a Wagga Wagga, Australia native, competed in the MIA Open Tournament located in Australia.
Â
Coming off of a 2019 campaign in which she was named a doubles All-American, Staines swept the event's women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. She claimed the women's doubles title while partnered with her mother, Karen Staines.
Â
Over the course of the tournament, Staines won three matches apiece in singles and doubles. Furthermore, Staines surrendered just two out of 34 games during her singles run and three out of 36 games in doubles.
"It was a very fun weekend competing in Griffith," Staines said. "I got to play some talented rising stars in the region, and was very glad to get the win in singles on the clay to prepare for Italy.
Â
"I was also lucky to get to play with mom in the doubles. I haven't played with her for over 10 years, and we were so happy to get through and win the title. And to top it off I was able to play mixed doubles with a college player who just graduated from Lee University, Jake Okines. To come out of the tournament with three titles was a huge success for the weekend."
Â
McGiffin, competing at the Tennessee Valley Open Championship in Chattanooga, won the women's doubles title.
Â
Following her second season at UT, McGiffin won three doubles matches in two sets apiece.
