WTEN CENTRAL: NCAA Individual Championships
May 20, 2019 | Women's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Sadie Hammond and Kaitlin Staines, the Tennessee women's tennis program's first All-Americans since 2013, are set to compete in this week's NCAA doubles championships in Orlando, Fla.
The NCAA field features 32 doubles teams from around the country. Hammond and Staines are seeded eighth in the bracket and will compete in first round action on Tuesday. The Lady Vol duo's match is slated to start at 8 p.m. ET.
Live streaming will be available throughout the day through the USTA's website. Beginning at 4 p.m., Tennis Channel will broadcast portions of the ongoing matches.
Hammond and Staines are scheduled to face UCLA's Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart in the opening round. Over the course of the spring, Bolton and Hart posted an 18-5 dual match record, competing primarily at the No. 2 doubles spot.
The winner of that first round matchup will face the winner of the match between Michigan's Kate Fahey and Brienne Minor and Virginia's Meghan Kelly and Sofia Munera in the round of 16 on Wednesday.
Over the course of Tennessee's season, Hammond and Staines compiled a record of 19-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot. Including fall competition, the duo posted an overall record of 25-4, including seven ranked wins.
During the regular season, Hammond and Staines ascended as high as No. 6 in the ITA rankings – the highest rank by a Tennessee doubles team since the 2013 season's final rankings, when Kata Szekely and Brynn Boren came in at No. 5 in the nation. Prior to this season, Szekely and Boren were Tennessee's most recent doubles All-Americans.
Before this past fall, Hammond and Staines had never competed in doubles together.
UT IN NCAA DOUBLES HISTORY: Hammond and Staines are the first Lady Vols to compete in the NCAA individual championships since Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams did so in 2015. That year, Henderson and Williams were eliminated in the first round.
Overall, Hammond and Staines are Tennessee's 26th all-time selection to compete in the NCAA doubles championships.
Current Lady Vol head coach Alison Ojeda also boasts some experience in the event, as she competed in the NCAA singles and doubles individual championships in 2000 and 2001.
