MEN’S TENNIS CENTRAL: NCAA Tournament Round of 64 vs. Radford
May 02, 2019 | Men's Tennis
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the first time since 2013, Tennessee men's tennis is set to host the opening two rounds of the NCAA Tournament in the Knoxville Regional. The Vols begin tournament action at 2 p.m. ET on Friday against Radford.
Tennessee (20-7) closed the season with a run to the SEC Tournament final two weeks ago in Gainesville, Fla. During that run, the Vols defeated perennial powerhouse and rival Georgia in the quarterfinal, 4-0, for the program's first shutout of the Bulldogs.
UT then rallied from down, 3-1, to knock off Florida, 4-3, in the SEC Tournament semifinal. The loss was the Gators' first in Gainesville since March 14, 2018 and the Vols' first win at Florida since 2010.
The Vols spent 14 weeks ranked inside the ITA Top 25 with six weeks spent in the top 15. Half of Tennessee's wins this season came against ranked opponents and UT was especially tough at home, going 10-3 on Rocky Top.
Seniors Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos proved to be excellent tone setters as they teamed up in doubles. The duo finished the season 13-4 in dual matches, 8-2 in the SEC, ranked No. 6 nationally and earned All-America honors.
Stodder carried over his strong play to singles where he started at center court all season long, finishing with a 14-8 dual match record while going 9-3 in league play. The Berlin, Germany native enters the NCAA Tournament as the 23rd-ranked singles player in the country.
Adam Walton had a big season for the Vols in singles as well, going 17-3 in dual matches and 7-2 in the SEC. The sophomore had a nine-match win streak from January 19 through March 7 and put the bow on Tennessee's rally against the Gators as his win on court two in the semifinal knocked out Florida.
Walton is the nation's 51st-ranked player in singles.
