TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced its 2019 regional award winners on Saturday with Tennessee's Timo Stodder and Adam Walton picking up individual honors.
Stodder, already an All-American in doubles, was named the Ohio Valley Senior Player of the Year after playing at the No. 1 position for the duration of the season and going 23-10 overall, 16-8 in dual matches and 9-3 in SEC play.
"I am proud for Timo to win this award," head coach Chris Woodruff said. "He put together an excellent season and demonstrated time and again that he is one of the top players not just in our region but in the country."
The senior took down 10 ranked opponents this year and enters the NCAA Individual Tournament as the nation's 23rd-ranked player. He adds the award to a growing list as the Berlin, Germany native has already earned All-SEC First Team honors for the third time in his career and will look to pick up another All-America accolade in singles this coming week in Orlando at NCAAs.
Stodder currently ranks 12th all-time in singles match wins in Tennessee history with 95.
Walton, who earned All-SEC First Team honors for the first time in his career this season, won the ITA Ohio Valley Player to Watch award. The sophomore put together another fantastic campaign playing at No. 2 most of the season as he won 25 matches for the second consecutive year.
"Adam also had a fantastic season for us and came up large in key situations," Woodruff said. "He was a steady performer all season long and he embodies the name of this award very well. Adam is just a sophomore and is still growing and getting better each time he is on the court. I am excited to see where he goes in his junior and senior seasons here at Tennessee."
The Home Hill, Australia native won 20 dual matches and picked up seven SEC victories this season. Walton had a career-long nine-match winning streak from Jan. 19 through March 7, beat six ranked opponents and reached No. 45 nationally in singles – the highest ITA ranking of his career.
Two of his biggest wins came in match-clinching fashion. On April 20 in the SEC Tournament semifinals against top-seeded Florida, Walton defeated Sam Riffice, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, knocking the Gators out of the SEC Tournament and sending the Vols to their first SEC finals match since 2013.
In the NCAA Regional against NC State, Walton took down Igor Saveljic, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, sending Tennessee to its first round of 16 since 2014.
Walton will join Stodder in Orlando this coming week for the NCAA Individual Championships as both earned at-large bids into the tournament.
