May 10, 2019 | Softball
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Tennessee freshman Ashley Rogers is one of 10 freshmen still in the running for Schutt Sports/NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association on Thursday.
Rogers became just the third player in UT history to be named to the Top 10 list, joining Caylan Arnold (2017) and Annie Aldrete (2014). Aldrete was named the co-winner in 2014.
Overall, she is the fifth player in program history to earn a spot among the 25 candidates for the award, joining Arnold, Brooke Vines (2016), Meghan Gregg (2015) and Aldrete. Tennessee has had a player make the list of 25 four out of the last five years.
Â
The right-hander is having a stellar freshman season for the Lady Vols with a 20-4 record, 1.89 ERA, two saves and 175 strikeouts. Her 20 victories are tied for second in the SEC while her seven wins in conference play were first in the league. Rogers' 175Â punchouts are the most by a UT freshman since Ellen Renfroe had 259 in 2011.
Â
Even more impressive, six of Rogers' wins this season have been complete-game shutouts and she threw 3.0 innings in a combined no-hitter vs. ETSU on April 16. She is the first freshman since Renfroe in 2011 to have at least six shutouts in a season.
Â
On May 21, the top three finalists will be announced. The Schutt Sports / NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony at the Women's College World Series banquet on May 28.
Â
There are nine universities and five different conferences represented among the 10 finalists. Two players from the SEC made the top 10.
