Micheala Williams Named Co-Champion of Weather Shortened Clemson Invitational
April 09, 2019 | Women's Golf
Third round play was stopped due to weather and scores will revert back to the completed second round
SUNSET, S.C. – University of Tennessee women's golf team finished seventh at the Clemson Invitational.
The Lady Vols had a 6-under-par round going at the turn in the third round before the suspended play indefinitely. At that point, junior Micheala Williams had a three shot lead for the individual title. She was 11-under-par for the tournament and 3-under for her round.
With the tournament being stopped due to weather, scores revert back to the completed second round. Williams and Auburn's Julie McCarthy were named co-champions of the event with McCarthy taking home the medalist honors due to the tournament's tiebreaker of lowest round recorded that week.
Williams finished atop the field that had 16 of the top 100 golfers in the country according the latest Golfstat rankings. It is the second time she has finished in the top spot after winning the Florida Gator Invitational in March.
In total, this is her team-leading sixth top-10 finish of the season and third consecutive this spring. So far this spring, the Athens, Ala. native has a stroke average of 70.46 with seven of her 13 rounds in the 60s.
Sophomore Mariah Smith claimed her second top-10 finish of the spring, placing seventh in the Clemson Invitational. Her first round 68 (-4) on Sunday helped her to her second lowest score through 36 holes in her career.
Smith was playing as an individual this week after competing in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur.
Fellow sophomore Waverly Whiston finished inside of the top 20 for the third time this spring, tying for 18th. Whiston also tied for 18th at the Florida Gators Invitational while tying for second in the FAU Winter Warm Up.
This was the last regular season tournament for Tennessee as next week the Lady Vols start postseason play at the SEC Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
