KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 5/7 Tennessee dropped the first game of the series-ending doubleheader, 3-0, to No. 13/14 Auburn at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium on Sunday.
With the loss, UT moves to 28-8 on the season and 6-5 in SEC play while the Tigers improve to 32-7 (8-3 SEC). Auburn claimed the series with the victory.
Junior Caylan Arnold got the starting nod in the circle and threw 3.0 innings. She allowed two runs on two hits in the loss. The Lady Vols then turned to Matty Moss in the fourth. The senior allowed one run on two hits through 4.0 innings of work. The pair combined for four strikeouts.
At the plate, the Orange and White were led by freshman Kaili Phillips who went 2-for-3. Aubrey Leach (1-for-3) and Kaitlin Parsons (1-for-1) also notched hits for UT.
After a scoreless first, Auburn plated its first two runs of the game on solo homers in the second and third innings.
The Tigers then extended their lead to 3-0 in the sixth, using a free pass, two wild pitches and a single to left field.
Tennessee put runners on in all but two innings but struggled to get the offense going as two double plays ended threats in the first and third.
In the sixth, Parsons doubled and moved to third base on a 4-3 groundout before two more infield outs ended the frame.
The Lady Vols attempted a two-out rally in the seventh as Phillips recorded her second hit of the day, a double down the left-field line. Unfortunately, a strikeout in the next at-bat ended the game.
