ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – After the opening round of the SEC Championships, the University of Tennessee men's golf team is in match play position.
Â
In the first round of the event, the Vols carded a round of 280 (E) and sit in seventh place on the leaderboard.
UT got off to a fast start as four players we even or below par at the turn. Tennessee also capped off the round with birdies coming through the final four holes. That included back-to-back birdies from redshirt sophomore Hunter Wolcott on No. 17 and No. 18.
Â
It helped him finish off an opening round 68 (-2) as he was 1-under-par on both the front and back nine. Wolcott is tied for ninth and just three strokes off the individual lead. He is in search of his sixth top-20 finish in the last seven events.
Â
The Burns, Tenn. has had his score count in all but the first round of the season.
Â
Redshirt junior Nolan Ray joins Wolcott in the top 25 on the leaderboard, turning in an opening round score of 72 (E). Ray was even par on both the front and back nine Wednesday finding birdies on the par-4 fourth and the par-4 10th.
Â
Ray enters the second round tied for 25th. Juniors Rhys Nevin and Brayden Garrison are just one stroke back of Ray in a tie for 31st.
Â
Garrison spent nearly the entire round inside of the top 25 and entered the final hole under par before a double bogey brought him to 1-over-par for his first round.
Â
Tennessee will tee off the second round tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. ET. The Vols will be paired with Texas A&M (+1) and Arkansas (+1) who are both tied for eighth after one round of play.
Coach's Take
On picking up a birdies in the final holes:
"The wind picked up there for our last six or seven holes and turned back into it. For the guys to finish as strong as they did, it was it was great to put ourselves in a perfect position heading into tomorrow." – Coach Brennan Webb
Â
On the play of Hunter Wolcott:
"He was just patient all day long just kind of fairways and greens. It paid off there at the end. He had patience all day long and never pressed. It never changed the game plan. We know that he's very, very good physically and execute. His game plan was in good shape." – Coach Brennan Webb
Â
On being in match play position after day one:
"We're in good shape. We're good to go off early tomorrow and hopefully get some holes in before the wind picks up and put ourselves in position head into the last day." – Coach Brennan Webb
