BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman right-handed pitcher Ashley Rogers was named the SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The Athens, Tenn., native posted a 2-1 record on the weekend and threw her ninth complete game of the season. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out nine batters through 11.2 innings of work to lead Tennessee to its third SEC series victory. Rogers posted a 2.40 ERA for the week.
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Mizzou, Rogers got the starting nod and was ultimately charged with the loss after giving up three runs on two hits. She bounced back in the second game and went on to deliver a one-hit, complete game for the Lady Vols. She allowed just one run and fired four strikeouts in the 7.0 inning outing to improve to 11-2 on the season. It marked her sixth appearance of the season in which she allowed one hit or less.
Rogers then entered in relief in the series finale, going on to pitch 4.2 shutout frames to earn the win. She gave up just three hits and struck out five Tigers in the outing. Of her 75 pitches, 50 were strikes.
The freshman's maturity in the series helped UT to its third straight conference series win which is the most to begin a season since 2014.
This is Rogers' first-career SEC Freshman of the Week honor and the first for a Tennessee freshman since Caylan Arnold was named SEC Freshman of the Week on March 28, 2017.
Rogers ranks third in the conference with 118 strikeouts and fourth with a .163 opposing batting average, 100.1 innings of work, 12 wins and 22 appearances. In SEC play only, she leads the league with a .146 opposing batting average and is second in wins with four. Rogers 4.20 hits allowed per seven innings also ranks second in the conference and is 20th in the nation.
