Lady Vols sit three strokes off the cutline entering the final round of stroke play
HOOVER, Ala. – Heading into the third round of the SEC Championships, the University of Tennessee women's golf team sits three shots off the cutline for match play.
For the second day in a row, the Lady Vols were 4-over-par at the turn. Sophomore Waverly Whiston was 1-under-par at the turn with birdies on the par-5 third and par-4 seventh.
On the day, Whiston moved up four spots on the leaderboard, cutting three strokes off her first round score. She turned in a second round score of 74 (+2) which was the second lowest of any Tennessee player Thursday.
Junior Micheala Williams had the low team score in round two, carding a round of 73 (+1) to move up one spot on the leaderboard. On the par-5 11th, Williams became the first player to record an eagle in the tournament.
The eagle brought the Athens, Ala. native back to even par at that point and had her fourth birdie of the day came on No. 17 to help close out her round. She enters the final round of stroke play as the highest Lady Vol player on the individual leaderboard as she is tied for 27th overall.
Sophomore Mariah Smith and senior Ariana Macioce are just two strokes back of Williams and tied for 38th on the individual leaderboard entering Friday's round.
As a team, Tennessee sits in 12th and just three shots back of the cutline for the eighth and final spot in match play. LSU currently sits in the final match play spot at 15-over-par.
Tennessee will tee off the third round tomorrow at 10:10 a.m. ET off hole No. 10. The Lady Vols will be paired with Missouri (+21) and Kentucky (+27) who are in 13th and 14th, respectively.
Coach's Take
On second round play:
"It was a disappointing day. The course is tough, and it's easy to shoot four or five over. So, that's why we needed a low score, but just too many unforced errors out there today. We're a better team than this and they knew it was an important day." – Coach Judi Pavon
On changing weather conditions for the third round:
"We'll have to be really tough. Nobody will love being out here if the conditions are what's forecasted, and that's kind of a good thing. It'll be really important that we get off to a good start, that they hit the ball and where we tell them to hit it. We'll talk about that tonight and trying to get them ready to be totally prepared for what they need to do tomorrow." – Coach Judi Pavon
