BIG TEAM: Tennessee's eight individual NCAA indoor qualifiers are its most since sending nine individuals and two relays squads in 2016. Five senior captains (Maia McCoy, LaChyna Roe, Stamatia Scarvelis, Seth Whitener and Mustaqeem Williams) will represent the Big Orange in Birmingham, in addition to junior high jumper Darryl Sullivan, sophomore triple jumper Jalen Tate and freshman triple jumper Alonie Sutton.
Â
WHERE THE VOLS STACK UP: To qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, a student-athlete must rank inside the top-16 of their respective event with marks set during the 2018-19 indoor season. See below for a breakdown of Tennessee's qualifiers and where they rank nationally:
SENIOR SPRINT DUO: Mustaqeem Williams and Maia McCoy lead the Big Orange with two entries each, as both will compete in the 60m and 200m dashes in Birmingham. Tennessee is one of two programs in the country to have dual 60m-200m qualifiers on the men's and women's sides.
Â
BOUNCE SQUAD: Tennessee's four jumpers competing this weekend make up the third-most of any team in the country, as well as the most for Tennessee at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the past two decades. High jump specialist Darryl Sullivan returns to the meet for the first time since 2017, while triple jumpers LaChyna Roe, Alonie Sutton and Jalen Tate are set to make their national championship debuts on Saturday.
Â
#NEWELLKNOWSTHROWS: Weight throw standout Stamatia Scarvelis will make her third-consecutive appearance at the national meet, while Seth Whitener is set to make his indoor championship debut in the weight throw this weekend. Tennessee is one of three Division I programs (North Dakota State, UCLA) to have entries in the men's and women's weight throw at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Â
ALL-SEC OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED: The Southeastern Conference released its postseason awards earlier this week, with six Tennessee athletes receiving All-SEC recognition from the league office. SEC Indoor Champions Stamatia Scarvelis and Mustaqeem Williams garnered First Team honors, while bronze medalists Joseph Maxwell, Zach Long and Maia McCoy earned Second Team acclaim. UT rookie Alonie Sutton tabbed All-Freshman Team accolades as the top freshman finisher in the long jump at SECs, recording a mark of 6.17m (20-3).
Â
SULLIVAN-LED SQUADS AT #ncaaTF: Since director of track & field Beth Alford-Sullivan took over the program in the fall of 2014, Tennessee has produced 42 All-America citations at the indoor national championships. The total includes 23 First Team All-Americans, 19 Second Team honorees and four NCAA individual champions.
Â
Tennessee's most complete NCAA Indoor effort under Sullivan's reign came at the same location as the 2019 meet, as the Big Orange claimed a pair of top-10 team finishes in Birmingham in 2016.
The men finished third in the country behind Christian Coleman's first national title in the 200m dash, along with top-3 individual finishes from Coleman (60m, 3rd), Nathan Strother (400m, 2nd) and Cameron Brown (weight throw, 3rd). The Lady Vols placed seventh as a squad that year, highlighted by an individual national championship from Felicia Brown in the 200m dash and top-3 finishes from Chelsea Blaase (5000m, 3rd) and Cassie Wertman (shot put, 2nd).
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee will open its 2019 outdoor track & field campaign at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge, hosted by Miami (FL) on Saturday, March 23 in Coral Gables, Fla.
