Tennessee to play outside of the mainland United States for the first time since the 2013-14 season
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee women's golf team heads to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational this weekend.
The field features 12-team with the Lady Vols entering as one of three teams ranked in the top-40 in the latest GolfStat rankings. The field includes defending National Champions Arizona who comes into the tournament ranked No. 10.
Tennessee enters this weekend ranked as the No. 29 team in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
The Lady Vols are coming off of a fourth-place finish at the Florida Gators Invitational, finishing just three shots back of Campbell and Miami who tied for second. Junior Micheala Williams captured her first individual title after shooting the second lowest round in program history.
Her Sunday 65 (-5) helped her jump up 12 spots in the final round to finish one stroke better than three top-100 players according to GolfStat. In all, she defeated 10 of the top 100 players in college golf.
It was the third individual championship for the Lady Vols this season. They are the only SEC school to have three individual winners this season [Malia Stovall (Starmount Classic) and Mariah Smith (FAU Winter Warm Up)]. It was the first collegiate win for all three players.
In all, Tennessee has taken home five trophies through eight events this season as it won the team titles at the Starmount Classic and FAU Winter Warm Up. The Lady Vols will look to add their fourth trophy of the spring this week in Mexico.
In traveling to Puerto Vallarta, this is the first time Tennessee has played outside of the mainland United States since the 2013-14 season when UT took part in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. It marks the sixth time overall in program history.
Tomorrow's first round is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. (ET) at El Tigre Golf and Country Club. Tennessee will be paired with Arizona and Kennesaw State, teeing off of hole No. 1.
The Lady Vols' Lineup
Micheala Williams
The Athens, Ala. native is coming off of her first collegiate win at the Florida Gators Invitational two weeks ago. After winning the title, Williams became the second Lady Vol player this season to earn SEC Golfer of the Week honors.
Ariana Macioce
The senior was one of three Tennessee players to tie for 18th on the individual leaderboard in Gainesville, Fla. With the top-20 finish, Macioce has now placed in the top 20 in the last six events, dating back to Starmount Classic in early October.
Waverly Whiston
Whiston is coming off of her fifth top-25 finish of the season and the second in three events this spring. The sophomore carded a collegiate-low 214 over three rounds in Gainesville as she has finished inside the top 25 both years at the Gator Invitational.
Mariah Smith
Smith has recorded a team-high seven rounds of par or better this season. Three of those rounds have come this spring including a collegiate-low 67 in Boca Raton, Fla. Smith will be looking for her fifth top-25-finish of the season and third of the spring after tying for 18th a the Florida Gators Invitational.
Mikayla Bardwell
Bardwell, who has played in the Tennessee lineup in every tournament during her freshman campaign, enters the Hawkeye El Tigre Invitational as the team leader in stroke average at 73.10 while also having a team best five top-10 finishes this season.
Lady Vols' Individual
Allison Herring
The senior plays in her second event of the season after finishing tied for 41st at the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate in September. Herring shot a collegiate-low 70 in the final round of Tennessee's home tournament.
