March 14, 2019 | Softball
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Senior infielder Aubrey Leach was selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball as announced by the organization on Thursday.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
This season, Leach continues to display excellence both on and off the field.
Currently a Vol Scholar, she is a three-time Easton/NFCA Scholar-Athlete and has been named to the SEC Spring Honor Roll the past three years. She has made the dean's list seven times, most recently earning Summa Cum Laude honors in Fall 2018.
Within the community, Leach has volunteered on numerous projects and has helped with Knoxville Challenger Games at UT. During the summer of 2017, she took part in the VOLeaders Academy's 13-day study-abroad trip to Vietnam where she and fellow Tennessee student-athletes learned about the nation's culture and used sports as a means to enact positive change.
On the diamond, Leach remains one of the nation's top talents. A USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 25 Finalist in 2018, she earned preseason All-America accolades from FPN and JWOS. She was also named to the Preseason All-SEC Team. Leach currently ranks second in the SEC and 10th in the country with a .492 batting average. Nationally, she's ranked in the top 13 in two other categories with a .593 on-base percentage (13th) and 1.27 runs per game (5th)
The Woodlands, Texas, native set Tennessee's single-season record for runs scored and led the nation in 2018 in that category with 80. She is the NCAA DI active career leader in runs scored with 218 and is second in walks with 135.
Leach is one of four Southeastern Conference student-athletes tabbed to the 30-candidate list.
The candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
