#7 Lady Vols Homer Four Times in 15-1 Rout of New Mexico
March 01, 2019 | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. – For the second time in as many games, No. 7 Tennessee took the lead off of back-to-back home runs by Haley Bearden and Kaili Phillips and never looked back, downing New Mexico, 15-1, in Game 3 of the Judi Garman Classic on Friday.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Tennessee plated one run in the second. Cailin Hannon started things off with a two-out double down the right-field line and came around to score on Kaitlin Parsons' one-bagger to left, giving UT a 1-0 lead.
The Lobos answered in the bottom of the frame, tying the game up at 1-1 with a solo home run by D'Andra DeFlora. That would be the only run of the game scored by New Mexico.
UT went on to scratch six runs across on six hits in the third. The Lady Vols notched four consecutive hits, including Bearden's and Phillips' homers, to plate three of the runs.
In the fourth inning, Tennessee added one run to the board before recording seven scores on five hits and an error in the fifth to make it a 15-1 game. Bearden started off the final frame with a walk and came home on Phillips' second dinger of the day. Ally Shipman then launched a ball of her own beyond center field in the next at-bat. Five Lady Vols proceeded to reach base via two walks, two hits and error, with four scoring before the inning ended.
In the circle, junior right-hander Caylan Arnold earned the start and the win. She tossed 3.0 innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out seven batters. Senior Matty Moss came on in relief in the fourth inning and pitched 2.0 shutout innings.
Tennessee (16-2) was led at the plate by Phillips, who went 3-for-5 (two home runs) with five RBIs and two runs scored. She is the second Lady Vol to drive in five runs this season as Amanda Ayala also had five RBIs vs. UTSA on Thursday (2/28/19).
ON DECK: Tennessee is set to play two games on Saturday against Michigan and No. 20 Oregon. The Lady Vols will face the Wolverines at 5:30 p.m. ET and the Ducks at 11 p.m. ET. Both games will be broadcast by FloSoftball and the Michigan game will have live stats available on UTSports.com.
