PEORIA, Ariz. – After two rounds of play at the Westbrook Invitational, the University of Tennessee women's golf team sits in a tie for ninth on the leaderboard.
The Lady Vols have three players in the top 30 on the individual leaderboard entering the final round at Westbrook Village Golf Club. Junior Micheala Williams turned in a third consecutive under par round to start the tournament with an opening round 70 (-2).
In her first 18 holes of play Sunday, she only recorded one bogey and at one point was as low as 3-under. Williams is the top Lady Vol on the individual leaderboard as she is tied for 17th at 1-under-par.
Just two strokes back of Williams, senior Ariana Macioce and sophomore Mariah Smith are tied for 27th at 1-over-par.
Macioce recorded the low score for the Lady Vols in the second round of the Westbrook Invitational with a 3-under round of 69. It included three birdies on the back nine and four in total for her lowest round at Tennessee.
She was just one stroke off of her collegiate low which she recorded at the Amelia Island Collegiate in 2017 during her time at Georgia Southern.
Smith, who is coming off of her first individual win as a collegiate at the FAU Winter Warm Up, carded five birdies in the first round to join Williams at 2-under with an opening round of 70.
Tennessee, who is just six strokes out of the top five, will be paired with host Missouri (+4) and UC Davis (+6) who sit in 11th and 12th, respectively. Tomorrow will be another shotgun start with the final round scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. (ET).
Coach's Take
On Ariana Macioce's second round:
"Ari came back with a great second round today. She has played this course a couple times so, she knew she could play well and was pretty disappointed after the morning round." – Coach Judi Pavon
On the play of Micheala Williams today and in spring as a whole:
"She has been playing well which is great to see. She had a great first round and didn't putt as well in the second round but, hit the ball well. She got to work on her putting a little after the round so, she will be ready for tomorrow." – Coach Judi Pavon
On Lady Vols heading into final round:
"We lost five shots at the end of the round today which put us quite a ways back heading into tomorrow. We are going to just try to play as well as we can and see where that puts us. We didn't play poorly today, we just had to count a little bit too high of fourth score." – Coach Judi Pavon
