Tennessee finishes eighth in the tournament as Ariana Macioce and Micheala Williams place in top 25
PEORIA, Ariz. – The University of Tennessee women's golf team finished eighth at the Westbrook Invitational Monday.
The Lady Vols carded their lowest round of the week in the final round and the second lowest round on the course, helping them move up one spot on the final leaderboard. Tennessee finished the tournament with a final score of 862 (-2) and was just two strokes back of placing inside of the top five on the leaderboard.
UT, who turned in a third round score of 283 (-5), counted three scores under par including the second consecutive 3-under-par round for Arizona native Ariana Macioce.
The senior tied her lowest score as a Lady Vol by having a pair of birdies an eagle on her scorecard, helping her tie for 16th on the individual leaderboard. This is the fifth straight event Macioce has finished inside of the top 20 on the leaderboard. Her three-day total of 214 was a collegiate low for the senior.
Macioce who only had one bogey on the day bounced back on the very next hole, eagling the par-4 18th. It was one of just eight eagles recorded by the field this week.
Joining Macioce at 3-under on Monday was sophomore Waverly Whiston, carding a final round 69 including four birdies.
This is the second time this spring Whiston helped give Tennessee a boost in the final round as she recorded a final round 68 (-4) at the FAU Winter Warm Up last week.
Like Whiston, freshman Mikayla Bardwell would also finish her round with four birdies to her name including one of the par-3 11th to finish off her tournament.
The freshman, who came into the week leading the team in stroke average, turned in a final round score of 71 (-1).
Junior Micheala Williams joined Macioce inside of the top 25 of the leaderboard as she finished the tournament 1-over-par and tied for 24th.
Coach's Take
On the team's focus heading into the final round:
"We talked about just playing well today and trying to improve our position. We only moved up one place but also, gained seven shots on the eventual winners today. I'm happy with the way we played and that five of our six players broke par at least one round this week." – Coach Judi Pavon
On the play of Ariana Macioce:
"Ari played really well today to go with her second round from yesterday. She is very competitive and has stepped up and become a really solid player for us. She had her low tournament total this week." – Coach Judi Pavon
