Cook Named SEC Freshman of the Week
October 07, 2019 | Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee freshman midfielder Isabella Cook has been announced as the SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Â
A native of Elmhurst, Illinois, Cook scored her second game-winner of the season and dished out an assist as Tennessee defeated Kentucky 2-0 Sunday for its first SEC win of 2019.
Â
Cook's goal came in the 20th minute on the end of a cross from classmate Colleen McIlvenna, putting the Vols ahead 1-0 in the early going with her third score of the season. Nine minutes later, Cook connected on an assist to MA Vignola to give UT a 2-0 lead that would hold for the final score.
Â
Cook logged a season-high 80 minutes against the Wildcats and was part of a strong team defensive effort, as UT held Kentucky without a shot on goal for the entire contest. Her three points were also a season-high and the most by a Tennessee freshman since Sonia Ouchene Salón also logged three points against Cincinnati on Sept. 8.
Â
Cook is the first Vol to be named SEC Freshman of the Week since Oct. 31, 2014 - when Carlyn Baldwin was honored following back-to-back wins over No. 21 Missouri and Ole Miss.
Â
Tennessee returns to action Thursday night, hosting the Georgia Bulldogs in another SEC East rivalry matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
