Vols Draw At Mississippi State Sunday Afternoon

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Tennessee soccer team fought back to earn a 1-1 draw with Mississippi State on the road and claim a point in the SEC standings Sunday afternoon at the MSU Soccer Stadium. Senior forward MA Vignola tied the match in the second half on a penalty kick for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

Vignola's equalizer came in the 64th minute of action, as the Cincinnati, Ohio native converted her third penalty kick in three tries season. Sophomore forward Mackenzie George earned the penalty as she drew a foul on a tackle inside the box.

Bulldog forward Onyi Echegini opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, as the freshman fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box inside the near post. The goal was assisted by Olivia Hernandez and Monigo Karnley, who leads the squad with six assists on the season.

Mississippi State posted a 22-14 lead in shots for the match, with a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 11-8 in favor of the Bulldogs, while Tennessee notched a 52-48 advantage in the battle for possession.

Neither side scored in the opening half, as Tennessee led Mississippi State 7-3 in shot attempts and 4-1 in corner kicks. Shots on goal and saves were even at two apiece in the first 45 minutes.

UP NEXT: The Vols return home Thursday night, Oct. 31 for their regular season finale against the league-leading Arkansas Razorbacks. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium, with senior recognitions beginning at approximately 6:40 p.m.
