Tennessee finishes tied for seventh in front of or tying three top-25 teams
ALPHARETTA, Ga. – The Tennessee men's golf team carded its lowest round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Sunday, tying for seventh on the leaderboard at the conclusion of the tournament.
Â
The Vols got their day off to a quick start, as they were 5-under-par through nine holes with all five players at par or better. This helped them elevate into a tie for fifth on the leaderboard with nine holes remaining in the competition.
Â
The team's final round 286 (-2) shaved eight strokes off its score from Saturday's second round as it finished with a 54-hole total of 874 (+10). It marked the seventh time in 14 rounds this fall that Tennessee has finished par or better as a team.
Â
Two Vols players capped off their tournaments with under par rounds. Redshirt freshman Bryce Lewis grabbed his fourth top-25 finish of the fall season as he turned in a final round 70 (-2) to tie for 15th, individually.
Â
It marked a team-high ninth time this season that he has carded a round of par or better and his second consecutive after a 72 (E) on Saturday.
Â
Joining Lewis in the top-25 were junior Spencer Cross and senior Rhys Nevin who tied for 24th in Alpharetta, Georgia with 54-hole scores of 219 (+3). In the final round of the competition, Nevin was under par with a 71 (-1) that included the one of the two Vols eagles this weekend.
Â
Both Cross and Nevin have finished inside of the top 25 in all five events this fall.
Â
At the conclusion of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, Tennessee either tied or placed in front of or tied with three top-25 teams in the country. This included No. 1 Georgia Tech as the Vols edged the Yellow Jackets by a stroke.
Coach's Take
On playing right with some of the highest ranked teams in the country:
"This is just another indication for our guys that we can play with the best teams in the country and adds to their belief that they have been building over the last two seasons." – Coach Brennan Webb
Â
On the play of Bryce Lewis this week:
"For his first time in the lineup, he had a great tournament and against one of the best fields of the year. The most impressive thing for me was that he did it without his best stuff. He just tried to shoot the lowest score he could each day and didn't worry about anything else. For a freshman to bring that mentality to the lineup is a great thing for our program and something that will help us immensely." – Coach Brennan Webb
On the consistency of Rhys Nevin and Spencer Cross in fall season:
"To have a great program, you have to have your upperclassmen perform on a consistently high level. Rhys and Spencer did exactly that this semester. If we get a couple of the other guys performing to their level, we have a chance to have a great spring semester and postseason."– Coach Brennan Webb
