Lady Vols Place Third At Penn State National Open
October 18, 2019 | Track & Field
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Three Lady Vols placed inside the top-10 individually to help lead Tennessee to a third-place team finish at the Penn State National Open Friday morning. The result marked UT's fourth consecutive meet placing top-5 as a team this fall.
Paced once again by the trio of Katie Thronson, Sydney Seymour and Megan Murray, Tennessee tallied 92 points for third in the team standings. Nationally ranked Penn State took home the title on their home course, while Georgia Tech claimed the runner-up result. The Lady Vols notably knocked off Princeton and No. 23 Penn who finished fourth and fifth at the meet, respectively.
"Very pleased with our team performance today," head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan said. "We knew coming in that there would be five teams in the mix. Penn beat us by a small margin a couple weeks ago, so it was nice to get one back from them. Also took care of Princeton for the second meet in a row. It was a great, competitive environment with three Lady Vols in the top-9 and just an outstanding overall performance."
Thronson crossed the line third overall with a time of 20:26.0. Seymour clocked in at 20:55.9 to earn an eighth-place finish, while senior captain Murray timed a 20:58.8 over the six-kilometer course to place ninth individually.
"In four races this season we've had three different top finishers, and that's been great to see," Sullivan said. "Thronson got it back today. Sydney Seymour fell about 400 meters in, was in dead last around the 600 meter mark and worked her way up to eighth place. Extremely proud of her for that."
Abigail Smith (21:41.7) and Alyssa Wolf (21:44.0) rounded out the Tennessee top-five scorers once again, placing 39th and 40th respectively at the meet. Other finishers for UT included Alaina Riordan (21:59.3), Kathleen Maley (22:45.9) and Sarah McCabe (23:06.2).
"It was a little chilly up here in the northeast, aside from that we had a great trip in a competitive environment," Sullivan said. "The course was in great shape, shoutout to [Penn State cross country coach] John Gondak for putting on a great meet."
UP NEXT: Tennessee cross country's regular season wraps up Saturday as the men's team competes at the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station. Postseason action begins Friday, Nov. 1 at the SEC Cross Country Championships in Lexington, Ky.
